The prison divestment movement won a significant victory this month when JPMorgan Chase & Co. announced it will no longer finance private operators of prisons and detention centers, including CoreCivic and GEO. Just a few months ago CalSTRS (the California State Teachers’ Retirement System) voted to divest from CoreCivic and GEO as well. This is the result of campaigning by Freedom to Thrive (formerly Enlace), teachers from Educators for Migrant Justice, and other allies. The movement has moved pensions funds from prisons in Chicago, New Jersey, and New York. Cities like Portland have also cut ties and created socially responsible investment committees. The campaign is built on a bold vision at the intersection of criminal and immigration systems, abolition, and reinvestment (i.e. participatory budgeting).
