Charley Chehoud is an asylum seeker who left Lebanon in 1989 to escape religious persecution. He has worked with New Jersey police for years – even helping solve a high profile murder case. Because of a missed court date, he is facing deportation and ICE continues to hold him in solitary confinement.

Essex County detention centers are notorious for inhumane conditions and treatment of inmates. Recently, the Newark community has fought the expansion of immigrant detention in Essex County – the board of county freeholders has voted to expand immigrant detention to bring more money into the area. Charley has faced violence and almost two weeks of solitary confinement. His treatment exemplifies the rampant abuse that takes place behind the Essex County Jail’s walls.
